The short, slightly terrifying answer is: it depends entirely on where you’re standing. Yes, I know. The universe didn’t think to make this easy for us mere mortals. If you’re in the path of totality, you have a precious few minutes of pure, screaming darkness.
If you’re only getting a partial eclipse, it’s like watching a slow-motion bite being taken out of a glowing cheese sandwich. Which is cool, but you still need the exact window. Don’t just look up at noon and shrug. That’s how you end up squinting at a normal, boring sun.
Seriously, the sun does not care about your schedule. It’s been doing this for billions of years. You have to meet it on its terms.
Find Your Local Time, Now
I’m not kidding. Put down the phone, close the cat video, and Google your city plus “eclipse time.” Do it. I’ll wait. (Tap tap tap. Is it done?) Great. You now have a specific hour and minute.
Here’s the trick: the eclipse has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The peak—that “oh wow, the world is ending in a cool way” moment—is usually just a few minutes long. You cannot be late for that part.
Think of it like the best scene in a movie. You wouldn’t show up during the end credits, right? Well, the eclipse is the end credits for daytime, and you want the climax.
