Here’s the killer: If the wound is deep, bleeding heavily, or looks like a volcano of pus, do not play doctor. Topical antibiotics are for superficial ouchies. Deep puncture wounds (like from a fight) need systemic antibiotics from a vet, or you risk sepsis. Also, never use anything with hydrocortisone (steroid cream) because it suppresses healing and can create a false sense of improvement.

And for the love of whiskers, avoid human antibiotic ointments marked “pain relief”—they contain lidocaine or pramoxine, which are toxic to cats. I once saw a friend’s cat swallow a blob of that stuff and end up with a twitching, drooly nightmare. Not cute.

What About “Natural” Alternatives?

I see you, internet friend who swears by coconut oil and Manuka honey. Listen, honey has some antibacterial properties, but it’s messy, sticky, and attracts all the dirt in your house. For a small, clean scrape, it’s okay. For an infected wound? No. You need a proven, sterilized antibiotic that kills Staphylococcus and Pasteurella (common cat bacteria). Honey won’t touch that.

Also, don’t use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide directly on an open wound. It damages healthy tissue and hurts like a beast. Thanks to my vet, I learned to use a gentle antiseptic like dilute chlorhexidine before applying the topical antibiotic.
