Let's meet the gang. At the top of Group 7, you have fluorine (F). This stuff is so aggressive it can eat through glass. It’s the reason your toothpaste is so good at protecting your teeth—it teams up with calcium to make a super-strong shield called fluorapatite.
Next up is chlorine (Cl). You already met it at the pool. It’s also the reason your tap water doesn’t give you a stomach bug. Chlorine is the ultimate cleaning buddy, zapping bacteria and keeping things fresh.
Then we have bromine (Br). Think of a red, smelly liquid that is a bit of a moody artist. It’s used in things like sedatives and fire retardants—keeping you calm and your couch from going up in flames. Smart, right?
At the bottom, there’s iodine (I). If you’ve ever scraped your knee as a kid and felt that sting from the brown bottle, that was iodine. It’s also crucial for your thyroid gland. Without it, your energy levels would tank, and you’d feel like a deflated balloon.
And the final member is astatine (At), which is so rare and radioactive it’s basically a ghost. We don’t see it much, but it’s part of the family.
