Walk into any playground in London or Manchester, and you’ll hear a symphony of Oliver, Amelia, and George. These aren’t just old-fashioned favourites—they’re status symbols. Think The Crown meets a Cotswolds cottage.
But look a little closer at the ONS charts, and you’ll spot the wildcards. Names like Arlo and Isla are climbing fast, fuelled by celebrity baby culture and a shift toward softer, vowel-heavy sounds.
Did you know that Isla (pronounced eye-la) has Scottish Gaelic roots and means “island”? It’s a perfect example of how names travel—from a rugged Hebridean isle to a hipster nursery in Hackney.
A Quick Practical Tip for Name-Spotters
If you’re trying to gauge whether a name is “on the rise” or “on the way out,” check the regional data. The ONS breaks it down by county, so you can see that George is eternal in the South East, while Archie dominates the Midlands.
Pro hack: Look at the names of children aged 5–10 right now. Those will be the names you hear on university lists and dating apps in a decade. Spoiler alert: Luna and Teddy are coming for you.
