If you want to avoid a stinging situation, avoid black, brown, and dark red. Seriously. To a bee, these colors scream “predator.” Why? Because bears and skunks—their natural enemies—are usually dark-colored.
Imagine you’re a bee. A big, dark, hairy thing ambles toward your hive. You’d flip out, right? That’s what happens when you wear a black hoodie or brown boots. You look like a threat on two legs.
So if you’re heading to a picnic, maybe skip the charcoal tee. Wear something light. Your skin will thank you. Your ankles will, too.
Red? Trick Question!
Here’s a weird one: bees can’t see red. At least, not the way we do. To them, red looks like dark gray or black. So a red shirt? Might as well be a warning flag.
I learned this the hard way. I wore my favorite crimson hoodie to a farmer’s market. A bee landed on my shoulder, gave me the side-eye (do bees have sides?), and then buzzed off in a huff. I was fine, but my ego was bruised.
So no red either. Or maroon. Or burgundy. Basically, if it’s the color of a ripe cherry or a fire truck, change it.
