So, here's a fun fact: did you know that the Memphis Belle was originally named the "Hell's Angel", but Captain Morgan's girlfriend, Margaret Polk, convinced him to change the name to something more wholesome? Or, how about this: the Memphis Belle was armed with an impressive 12 machine guns, which the crew used to fend off enemy fighters on more than one occasion.
The Memphis Belle's legacy extends far beyond her own story, too. She's been the subject of numerous books, films, and even a documentary series. And, in 1990, a big-budget film was released, starring Matthew Modine and Eric Stoltz, which, while not entirely accurate, helped to cement the Memphis Belle's place in the public imagination.
Today, the Memphis Belle remains an enduring symbol of American courage and ingenuity, and her crew's story continues to inspire new generations. So, next time you're in Ohio, be sure to stop by the National Museum of the United States Air Force and pay your respects to this amazing aircraft and her brave crew. And, who knows, you might even learn a thing or two about history - but don't worry, it won't be boring, we promise!
