What if London wasn’t the answer? History has other contenders. Winchester was the capital under King Alfred the Great. It even has a giant round table from Arthurian legend—allegedly.
Then there’s Colchester. The Romans made it Britain’s first capital. It’s older than London by a few decades. Try telling that to a cockney taxi driver—they’ll laugh.
Even York had a shot. For a brief medieval moment, it was the north’s capital. But London’s pull was too strong. Sorry, York—better luck next century.
London vs. The World
London isn’t the oldest capital—that’s arguably Damascus. But it is the most visited in Europe. Over 20 million tourists flood in yearly. They come for red buses, phone boxes, and fish-and-chips that always get soggy in the rain.
The London Underground is the world’s oldest subway system. Opened in 1863, it’s a ghost-filled maze of tunnels. Fun fact: Some stations have abandoned platforms where you can still see Victorian ads. Creepy and cool.
Capital Of England
Speaking of ghosts, the Tower of London has six resident ravens. Legend says if the ravens leave, the kingdom falls. So they keep their wings clipped. True story.
