According to Hasbro’s official rulebook, Free Parking is just a resting space. Nothing more. You land on it, you chill, you wait for your next turn. No cash. No lottery. No “bank pays you for landing here.”
It’s literally the most boring square on the board. I know, right? Feels like a letdown compared to the cash bonanza Dave scored.
So why does everyone think it’s a goldmine? Because we invented a house rule that turned a quiet corner into a casino.
The rule that took over the world
Sometime in the 1970s, families started tossing all the taxes and fines into the center of the board. You know, the money you pay for Income Tax, Luxury Tax, Community Chest penalties, and Chance card fees. The pile grows all game.
And the first lucky person to land on Free Parking? They take it all. Suddenly, a dull space becomes the most exciting stop on the board. Ka-ching!
This rule is so widespread that many people think it’s official. Trust me, I was one of them until I read the tiny booklet inside the box. It’s not.
