Honestly? Because people like to sound fancy. Bottled water companies know we will pay more for a word that sounds Italian or French. “Sparkling” sounds like something a princess would bathe in. “Carbonated” sounds like something a science teacher would spill on a lab coat.
So, you will see “sparkling mineral water” on a bottle of Perrier or San Pellegrino. That water comes from a specific natural spring and already has some minerals in it. Then they add extra bubbles. That makes it technically both sparkling and carbonated. See? It’s a Venn diagram, and the middle part is huge.
What's the Difference? Carbonated Water and Sparkling Water
But if you buy a generic store brand that says “carbonated water,” it is usually just tap water that got blasted with CO2. It’s still perfectly fine. It’s still bubbly. It still makes that satisfying hiss sound when you open it. Don’t let the name shame you.
The Verdict (Served Over Ice)
If you are at a bar and you order a “sparkling water,” you will get bubbly water. If you order a “carbonated water,” the bartender might pause for a second, then give you bubbly water. The only difference is the vibe.
Use “sparkling” when you want to feel like you’re on vacation in Tuscany. Use “carbonated” when you want to sound like you understand chemistry. Both are fizzy. Both are refreshing. Both are basically zero calories, unless you add that weird flavored syrup.
So next time someone tries to correct you and says, “Actually, sparkling water is from a natural spring,” just smile. Nod. Then hit them with the truth: all sparkling water is carbonated, but not all carbonated water is fancy. You’re welcome. Now go drink some bubbles and feel superior about it.
