No mental illness automatically means “no driving forever.” The DMV and doctors care about impairment. Can you react quickly? Can you focus? Are you hallucinating? Are you in a violent rage? If the answer to any of those is “yes, today,” you park it. If the answer is “no, I’m just quirky,” you’re probably fine.
My rule of thumb? If you’re feeling so weird that you’d be embarrassed to explain your driving to a cop, don’t get behind the wheel. Call a friend, take a Lyft, or just sit in your driveway and listen to a silly podcast until the feeling passes. Driving is a privilege, not a birthright, and your brain is allowed to take sick days. Just don’t take a sick day while merging onto I-95.
And if you ever see someone driving erratically, don’t assume they’re a jerk. They might just be fighting a gremlin in their own head—and they’re losing. Be patient, be safe, and for crying out loud, get your own mental health checked. Your car will thank you.
