Think of SATs week as the Black Friday of primary school. It’s a crazy, highly anticipated event that arrives with a lot of buildup and ends with everyone collapsing on the sofa eating stale biscuits. In 2027, this specific week is chosen because it’s far enough from summer holidays to keep the learning fresh, but close enough that everyone is counting down the days.
You’ll notice your child’s teacher suddenly starts carrying a travel mug of coffee that looks like it could power a small town. That’s the sign. By April, the classroom walls will be covered in ‘growth mindset’ posters and motivational quotes about ‘glittering unicorns of resilience.’ You’ll nod along, but secretly you’re just hoping they remember how to add fractions.
The Pre-SATs Circus (A.K.A. March and April)
Picture this: your eleven-year-old, who yesterday couldn’t find their own shoes, is now arguing about the difference between a verb and an adverb at the dinner table. “Mum, that’s a subordinate clause,” they’ll say, as you pour cereal. This is the pre-SATs training montage. It’s adorable and terrifying in equal measure.
You’ll also experience the ritual of the “practice papers.” These are like the dress rehearsals for a school play, but with more eraser shavings and fewer costume changes. One evening, your child will do a maths paper in record time but will be stumped by a question about how many oranges are left after Gary eats three. You’ll Google the answer. You’ll still get it wrong.
