Let’s be real for a second. If you’re shivering on your way to work on 2 December, you do not care about the Earth’s axial tilt. You care about your cold fingers. That’s meteorological winter, my friend.

But if you’re a bit of a romantic? A solstice lover? Then you wait for that 21 December date. It feels more meaningful, doesn’t it? Like, “Ah, the darkness has peaked. We’re on the way back to light.” Very poetic. Very Gothic novel.
Personally? I’m lazy. I go with 1 December. Why? Because it’s acceptable to start playing All I Want for Christmas on repeat that day. The solstice is too late for that emergency.
The “Feels Like” Winter
There is a third option, of course. The rogue option. It’s what I call “feels like” winter. This is when you wear a coat inside your house because the heating bill gave you heart palpitations.
Let’s be honest: in the UK, winter can arrive in mid-October. Have you seen a British October? One day it’s sunny, the next you’re building an ark. The actual “start” date is a polite fiction we tell ourselves.
The Met Office just watches the temperature. When the average temp drops below a certain point for a few days… hello winter. It doesn’t care about your calendar. It’s a bully.
