Picture this: you walk in, and your phone’s camera immediately starts sweating. There are enormous, flower-covered sculptures that look like dinosaurs or giant teacups. There are entire gardens designed by celebrities you vaguely recognize from BBC shows. And there are tents the size of aircraft hangars filled with orchids so perfect they seem fake.
But the real magic? The people-watching. You’ll see a retired couple arguing passionately about the exact shade of pink in a peony. You’ll see a teenager in a hoodie deep in conversation with a vendor about the best way to keep an orchid alive in a dorm room. It’s refreshingly wholesome. It’s like the internet, but everyone is talking about soil quality instead of politics.

How to Make It Your Kind of Fun
First, wear comfortable shoes. I cannot stress this enough. The show covers 11 acres in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Your feet will stage a mutiny if you try to do it in fancy loafers. Second, bring cash for the cake. There’s a famous champagne and strawberry stand, but the real star is the Battenberg cake from the RHS tea tent. It’s pink, yellow, and wrapped in marzipan. It tastes like triumph.
Third, talk to the gardeners. They are the most patient, passionate people on Earth. I once asked a man why his moss looked so fluffy, and he gave me a 15-minute lecture on humidity. I understood none of it, but I left feeling like I’d been given a secret. Their enthusiasm is contagious. You’ll go home and seriously consider buying a ficus tree. (Resist the urge until you’ve checked if your apartment gets even a sliver of sunlight.)
