Most brine tanks have a large, screw-on or snap-off lid. Just pop it open, and you’ll see a hollow chamber—sometimes with a little water at the bottom. This is where the magic happens.
You simply pour the salt pellets in until the tank is about half to two-thirds full. Don’t fill it to the brim! You need that air gap above the salt so the water can mix in properly during the regeneration cycle.
Think of it like a martini shaker—you need room for the shake, right? Too much salt, and your softener gets “stuffy” and can’t work its best.
But What If I Put It in the Wrong Spot?
Here’s the hilarious truth: most people can’t actually hurt the machine by guessing wrong. The brine tank is the only place with a big, obvious opening. The other tank (the resin tank) is sealed shut—no salt goes in there.
So if you pour salt into the wrong tank? You’ll just dump it on the floor or hear a sad, hollow clatter. No harm done—except to your pride. And maybe your socks.
