Santander has announced a closing wave of 95 branches across the UK by the end of 2026. That’s a lot of physical doors shutting for good. The bank says it’s because more of us are banking on our phones than ever before.
Think about it: when did you last queue up in a branch to pay a bill? Probably during the Obama administration, right? Santander is betting that most of us are fine with tapping a screen while waiting for our toast to pop.
But here’s the kicker: not every branch is on the chopping block. Many branches in big cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham are staying open, at least for now. The closures are hitting smaller towns and suburbs hardest—places where the bank is the only game in town for miles.
Where Exactly Are These Closures?
Santander published a full list on their website, but let’s be real—nobody wants to read a spreadsheet on a Thursday evening. Instead, think of your local high street. If you live in a town like Barnstaple, Louth, or Porthcawl, your branch might be on the list.
Other places getting the cold shoulder include Margate, Wishaw, and Camberley. It’s a bit like your favourite café suddenly announcing it’s only selling takeaway from now on. You’ll still get the coffee, but you’ll miss the chat with the barista.
The closures will happen in phases, with the first wave starting in July 2026 and the last doors locking in September. If you bank at one of these spots, you’ve got a few months to find a Plan B.
