If you want to be the highest-paid player in the NFL, there’s a secret handshake you need to learn: you have to be a quarterback. It’s like being the designated driver who also gets to drink the expensive champagne. Guys like Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow aren’t just throwing footballs; they’re throwing paper airplanes made of hundred-dollar bills.
Mahomes’ contract is so astronomical that it has its own zip code. He signed a ten-year extension worth half a billion dollars, which is the kind of money that makes you wonder if he pays his barber in gold bars. Joe Burrow isn’t far behind, securing a deal that essentially says, “Here’s the key to Cincinnati, the stadium, and a lifetime supply of chili.”
Then there’s Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson, who looked at their agents and said, “Match that, or I’m going to go run a lemonade stand.” They both got massive deals that make you feel better about your own salary until you remember they get paid to throw a ball while you get paid to sit in traffic.
But What Do They Do With All That Cash?
You might think they buy mega-yachts and diamond-encrusted helmets. And some do. But a lot of them spend their money on things that make you nod in recognition, like insurance policies for their throwing arms. Imagine having to buy insurance for your right hand because it’s worth more than your house. That’s a level of “oops I dropped the remote” anxiety I can’t even fathom.

Other players invest in businesses. Mahomes owns a stake in the Kansas City Royals and a bunch of other stuff that probably makes his accountant cry with joy. Meanwhile, you’re debating spending five extra dollars on guacamole. See the difference? It’s the same feeling, just with a few more zeros.
