Fast forward to 2004. Carol and Chanda thought, “Hey, other families might love this insanity.” So they wrote a book. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition was born.
But here’s the kicker: they couldn’t get a publisher. No one believed in a creepy elf who watched your kids sleep. Rude, right?
So they did something very American: they self-published. Carol and Chanda, along with Chanda’s twin sister Christa Pitts, formed a company called Creata. They were the Elf Mafia, basically.
The Big Break: A TV Appearance
In 2007, they got a slot on The Today Show. It was a make-or-break moment. And it exploded. People went nuts for the idea of a snitch-elf who required nightly hide-and-seek.
