Brian Chesky grew up in Niskayuna, New York, and he was always fascinated by design and entrepreneurship. He studied industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), which is like the Harvard of art schools. After college, he moved to San Francisco and started his career as an industrial designer, but he soon realized that his true passion was building something from scratch.
In 2007, Brian Chesky and his roommates, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk, came up with the idea for Airbnb. They were struggling to pay their rent, and they thought, "Hey, why not rent out air mattresses in our living room to travelers?" And just like that, the concept of peer-to-peer renting was born. It was a crazy idea, but it worked, and the rest is history.
