I’ve watched the advert six times tonight. I don’t even buy my groceries at Asda. I’m a Tesco man. But there’s something hypnotic about watching a grumpy green monster try to steal a bag of frozen carrots. It’s the performance of the year, and I say that unironically.
The moral of the story? Next time you’re on YouTube and you see that weirdly handsome Grinch in an Asda uniform, remember his name. John Hopkins. And remember the sweat. The tail. The rubber chicken. That’s not just an advert; that’s a man committing to the bit. And Benedict Cumberbatch, apparently, is also there.
So go ahead, watch it again. Share it with your mum. She’ll text you back, “Is that the guy from Sherlock?” And you can reply, “No, Mum, that’s John Hopkins, and he makes a better Grinch than a war hero.” Then pour a glass of wine. You earned it.
