At the heart of the chaos were Gary and Tony, two flatmates who made the word “responsible” sound like a foreign language. Gary, played by the brilliant Martin Clunes, was the slightly sharper but still hopeless romantic. Tony, played by Neil Morrissey, was the lovable idiot who thought beer and boobs were the answers to life’s deepest questions.
Together, they formed a wonderfully toxic cocktail of laziness, bad decisions, and terrible schemes. Their favorite pastimes? Drinking lager, playing pranks, and avoiding any semblance of adulting. Sound familiar to anyone?
The Angels (and the Foil)
Of course, no man behaves badly without a few women to roll their eyes. Enter Dorothy, Gary’s quiet, sweet girlfriend played by Caroline Quentin. She was the anchor who kept Gary from floating entirely into man-child oblivion. Then there was Deborah, Tony’s on-again, off-again girlfriend, played by Leslie Ash—a confident woman who could reduce Tony to a stammering puddle with a single glance.
The fourth musketeer? Kenneth, the flatmate who lived downstairs, played by the legendary Richard Wilson. He was the grumpy, put-upon neighbor who just wanted peace and quiet. Kenneth’s catchphrase, “I don’t believe it!”, became a national mantra for anyone watching two idiots ruin their own lives.
