Oh, you thought that was it? Cute. You’ll also need maintenance. Salt refills run $5–$10 per month for a typical family. That’s the price of a gourmet coffee, except this coffee keeps your showerheads from turning into limestone stalactites.

Filter replacements? About $100–$300 per year. And don’t forget the water waste—some softeners flush up to 50 gallons during regeneration each week. That’s like flushing a tiny swimming pool every month, but hey, at least the pool is soft.
Here’s a surprising fact: that $4,000 system can pay for itself in 5-7 years just by extending the life of your appliances. Your water heater, washing machine, and dishwasher all have “hard water grudge” points. Without a softener, they’ll die of clogged arteries by year eight. With one, they live to see their tenth birthday. That’s like a water-powered retirement plan.
The “Is It Worth It?” Brutal Honest Check
If you live in a place where the water is so hard it could be used as gravel, then yes. Forget the cost—your skin will stop itching, your glasses will stop fogging up with mineral residue, and your coffee will taste like actual coffee, not pool water. I’ve seen couples reconcile over a sink full of spotless wine glasses.
But if you’re on city water that’s already pretty decent? You might just need a point-of-use filter under the kitchen sink for $50–$200. Why blow $4,000 when you just want better tea? Don’t be the guy who buys a cannon to kill a mosquito.
One more surprising fact: some homes actually have water so bad, the cost of a system is cheaper than buying bottled water for a decade. Do the math—a family of four buying 20 gallons of bottled water a week spends about $1,200 per year. In five years, that’s $6,000. Plus, you’re not turning your garage into a plastic bottle mausoleum.
