If your water smells like a dozen eggs left in a hot car, you can blame sulfur. More specifically, a gas called hydrogen sulfide—nature’s way of saying, “I’m a little bit rotten.”
This gas usually comes from decaying organic matter deep underground. Think of it as the earth’s fart, but one that’s been marinating for a few thousand years.
Sometimes it’s just the water heater acting up. If the smell only hits your nose when you run hot water, your heater might be growing sulfur bacteria—like a tiny farm of stink bugs in your basement.
Why Your Shower Feels Like a Crime Scene
You step into a hot shower, trying to relax, and suddenly the air is thick with that eggy punch. Your soap smells like a meadow, but the steam smells like a marshland at low tide.
It’s not your fault. It’s the bacteria reacting with the magnesium rod in your water heater. Pro tip: swapping that rod for an aluminum one can save your nostrils.
But if the smell strikes with cold water too, the problem is deeper—literally. It’s coming straight from your well, and you’ll need a pro to chase it out.
