Ducks actually have a natural diet of insects, seeds, aquatic plants, and snails. That’s their Michelin-star meal. Bread is the equivalent of a gas station hot dog—convenient, but not recommended.
When you feed them junk, they fill up on it and skip the bugs that give them protein for strong bones and shiny feathers. Shiny feathers are a duck’s pride and joy—like a good hair day, but permanent.
Can Ducks Eat Bread? - The Hip Chick
And let’s not forget the water quality. Rotten bread in a pond can lead to algae blooms that suffocate fish and make the whole place smell like a swamp. Your duck photos will look way less cute if the background smells like a gym sock.
A Note on Duck Poop
More bread = more ducks = more poop. Duck poop is excellent fertilizer, but in massive amounts, it turns the pond into a nutrient swamp. Too much of a good thing is just… poop soup. Yuck.
You don’t want to wade through a minefield of duck droppings just to feed a cute mallard, do you? No. So feed less, spread it out, and keep the pond fresh.
And if a duck poops on your shoe? Congratulations, you’ve been blessed by the pond spirits. Consider it a badge of honor.
