What Country Has the Longest Coastline

Do you want a country with almost no coastline? Meet Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has a whole 20 kilometers of coast. That is a sad little sliver of beach wedged between Croatia.

Then there is Monaco. Its coastline is about 4 kilometers. You could walk the entire country in an afternoon. And still have time for ice cream.

Compare that to Canada again. Canada has more coastline per person than almost anywhere else. Every Canadian owns a tiny, personal piece of frozen beach. Good luck using it.

So, Who Wins My Heart?

I am going to be honest. Canada wins the official contest. The statistics say so. The maps say so. But I have a soft spot for Australia.

Australia’s coastline is about 25,000 kilometers. It is all actual, usable, sunbaked beach. No polar bears. No 100-meter ice cliffs. Just golden sand and dangerous spiders.

Plus, Australia has the Great Barrier Reef. That is a coastline bonus. Reefs count as coast if you squint hard enough. And a country with reefs is automatically cooler than a country with only frozen islands.
